NY Honorable Charles Barron on Haiti: how the US government has crippled the Haitian economy

Today, I would like to bring your attention to a brother barely known by Haitians in the USA. His name is the Honorable Charles Barron.  I could spend time telling you about him, but it is best that I let you read his own words on how the US government has been exploiting Haiti for more than a century with no interruption!  Here are the words of the Honorable Charles Barron.

Honorable Charles Barron on Haiti: In America, we often speak of Haiti as a poor country. Haiti has historically been an exploited country. Haiti is actually a very rich country, rich in spirit, rich in culture, rich in natural resources. However, what we don’t want to talk about here today is America’s responsibility in the exploitation of Haiti through imperialistic foreign policies toward Haiti. Remember that the Marines invaded Haiti. The United States occupied Haiti on July 28, 1915. The United States through imperialism and colonialism occupied Haiti. We exploited Haiti. The US took out the natural resources of Haiti and brought in American corporations. Haitian women used to make baseballs for baseball players in America that knock them out the park, and they make more money than the Haitian woman who made those balls just for the time they rounded the bases after they hit the home run. America supported Papa Doc and Jean Claude Duvalier who was a murderer, a dictator. America supported Francois Duvalier murdering Haitian people because he along with Baby Doc allowed for the exploitation of Haiti.

That’s what America did. Yeah! That’s what America did, and so we sit here talking about how racist Trump is. Of course, Trump needs to be hit every way you can hit him. Nevertheless, we should not let Hillary Clinton and Bill Clinton hide behind a Trump hit when they exploited Haiti as well when money was supposed to be given to the Haitian population. Don’t let the American President Woodrow Wilson and others who came after him hide behind Trump. Trump is horrible! He is a racist and fascist, everything you can think of. If he can create any other names he’s that too. What we don’t want to talk about is how the United States contributes to the destruction of the local Haitian economy. We don’t want to talk about policies even under the previous president (Barack Obama) that was hurtful to Latin America, hurtful to Africa where we strengthen military bases in Africa and not humanitarian aid. We don’t want to talk about that.

The Honorable Charles Barron on Haiti: USA and France owe a debt to Haiti

We need to do so because America owes a huge debt to Haiti, and so does France. Oh yeah, they owe a debt too. How dare France say Haiti has to pay them reparations after they colonize Haiti. Both France and America owe Haiti reparations to repair the damage that these countries did. You all come up here talking about we are all Americans and we have the same blood and all of that stuff. I can tell you that the American government needs to pay Haiti their reparations. We need to tell French to pay Haiti their reparations. Worse than the earthquake are colonialism and imperialism. That’s worse than an earthquake because that lasts a long time. It lasts for centuries. America and other foreign powers owe a debt to Haiti for bringing death and destruction after the revolution of Bookman, Dessalines, Henri Christophe liberate Haiti from France. They were beating France so badly and Napoleon was getting whipped that the French had to sell Louisiana to America because of the Haitian revolution.

Honorable Charles Barron: Why we need to understand Haiti’s History

We need to understand that history so when we get up here and talk about natural disasters like an earthquake. Don’t forget the human disaster of imperialism and capitalism. Don’t forget how its tentacles of racism reach across the globe and create poverty, death, and destruction in smaller countries that they could bully with their military forces. So as we stand for our brothers and sisters who are victims of this earthquake, we should always remember that we have a responsibility of making the foreign policy of America more humane and just for the countries that they exploited. America has an ugly history of exploitation and imperialism that we don’t want to discuss. We need to pay these countries back. They deserve it, and we owe it to them.

Here you have it, the own words of the Honorable Charles Barron, 60th Assembly District of New York. The voices of the likes of Charles Barron are not very popular. However, the story is there for those who are curious enough to look for it. How many of us in Haitian communities throughout the US know about this brother? I did not know about him until my sister sent me a video of him, I know a lot of good brothers and sisters who would stick their necks out for Haiti. I just did not know that this brother would actually stand up in front of lawmakers of his district to shed light on how the US government has crippled Haiti’s economy. He had the sense to put it in the context of global US imperialism even by calling out the first brother who became President of the USA. Yep! It all comes down to how much Haitian leaders are willing to stand up for Haiti instead of their own individualistic goals. Regardless of how you think of it, the job of foreign governments is to take advantage of other countries. Until you stick that into our brain, we will always be seen as a “shithole” nation even by those who are classy enough not to say it.

When will Haitians start caring for Haiti without waiting for corrupt Haitian government leaders? Will it be another decade or another century? Join the discussion below.
